Born to Portuguese parents in Caracas, Venezuela, Danny moved to the island of Madeira at a young age. There, he developed his football skills in the youth teams of C.S. Marítimo,[1] making his professional debut in a 2–1 league home win against Gil Vicente F.C. on 1 October 2001.[2] A few months later, he scored his first goal in a 1–2 loss at S.C. Salgueiros, also being sent off in the 60th minute.[3] He finished his first season with five goals in 20 games.
Having signed to national powerhouse Sporting Clube de Portugal for €2.1 million after that sole season, Danny was immediately loaned back to Marítimo, returning in June 2004. On February 2005, after having appeared less than 20 official times for the Lions, he joined Russia's FC Dynamo Moscow, a club that was signing a large number of Portuguese and Portugal-based players at the time (namely Maniche and Derlei). He would eventually be the one with the most success in Russia, being awarded the best Dynamo player of the 2005 season.
On 24 August 2008, Danny was bought by FC Zenit St. Petersburg for a fee of €30 million, which made him the most expensive player of the Russian League.[4] He made his club debut in the 2008 UEFA Super Cup game against Manchester United, where he scored the winning goal, later being named Man of the match in a 2–1 final win.[5] As Zenit finished the season in fifth place, the player contributed with ten league goals, the competition's joint second-best.
On 20 August 2008, Danny made his debut for Portugal in a friendly against the Faroe Islands, a 5–0 home win.
On 19 November, he scored his first goal for the national side, opening the score against Brazil; however, it turned out to be a sour one, as the hosts came from behind to take it 6–2.
After having appeared with Portugal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, in an eventual group stage exit,[6] while also playing regularly with the under-21s, Danny was picked in the squad that appeared at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
